Welcome to Fork In The Road

Learn skills that can save lives

Fork In The Road is a suicide prevention training provider that equips individuals, workplaces and communities with the practical tools and confidence needed to respond when someone is thinking about suicide.

The name Fork In The Road represents a pivotal moment, a point where someone is facing a critical choice between life and death, hope and despair, connection and isolation.

In suicide prevention, these moments matter. They’re opportunities where one conversation and one person’s willingness to listen and respond can change the direction of someone’s life.

Our training exists to prepare people for these moments. Through safeTALK workshops, we equip individuals with the skills to recognise when someone is at risk and to safely guide them toward help - the safer path at the fork in the road.

Our goal is to make suicide prevention accessible, understandable and actionable, because anyone can be a life-saving link in the chain of support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people with thoughts of suicide communicate their distress and invite help in some way. These invitations are often missed, dismissed or avoided for a variety of reasons, leaving people feeling more alone and more at risk.

SafeTALK will teach you how to recognise these invitations and connect people with the right support to keep them safe. SafeTALK is an international suicide alertness program developed by LivingWorks.

Anyone over the age of 15 years who wants to be part of a suicide safer community should attend.

For participants under 18 years, we encourage open discussion with a parent or guardian beforehand, and in some cases, attending together can provide added support and create space for meaningful conversations after the workshop. If you're unsure whether the training is right for a younger person, please contact us to discuss your situation. We’re happy to talk through the content, the environment, and what support is available, so you can make the best decision for your child.

Within the 4-hour workshop you will learn how to:

  • Identify when people might be having thoughts of suicide
  • Understand the reasons we may miss, dismiss or avoid suicide
  • Practice the simple yet effective TALK model (Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe)
  • Engage and connect someone at risk with further support

This will be achieved through presentations, facilitated discussions and skills practice.

A community support resource is available at all safeTALK workshops. Their role is to support your safety and comfort throughout the session. They can provide assistance and support if any participants are struggling with the subject of suicide in the workshop.

Yes, all participants who attend will receive a certificate.

Many organisations will provide 4 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits for attending safeTALK, including:

Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)

Australian College of Nursing (SCN)

Australian Counselling Association (ACA)

Australian Psychological Society (APS)

NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)

Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP)

Yes. We are happy and available to deliver a safeTALK session at any workplace for between 10 and 30 people per session.

Talking about suicide can be challenging and at times may trigger strong emotional responses from people. SafeTALK was designed to be strictly delivered face to face to ensure that participants are able to have these discussions in a safe and supported environment.

No, people are not required or expected to share their experiences.

We understand that conversations about suicide can be sensitive, and everyone processes this topic in their own way. Your wellbeing is our priority, and our trainers are there to support you throughout the session. Many people interested in suicide prevention have some form of personal experience with suicide. Sharing these experiences is not part of the safeTALK program.

First, we want to say we’re deeply sorry for your loss. Losing someone to suicide is a profound and personal grief, and it’s completely natural to feel unsure about whether safeTALK is right for you right now.

The workshop does include open discussion about suicide and warning signs, which can be emotionally triggering. If your grief is still very raw, it may be helpful to wait until you feel more emotionally ready, or to attend with a trusted support person.

We encourage you to reach out and have a confidential conversation with us before registering. We’re here to support you in making the decision that’s right for your wellbeing.
